As the civil society pillar of the Kimberley Process (KP), the KP Civil Society Coalition (CSC) has been documenting various persistent challenges in diamond mining, most recently with a short documentary Beyond Shining Illusions, which sheds light on the gap between marketing narratives and on-the-ground realities.
While the Kimberley Process claims that 99% of diamonds are now “conflict-free,” communities affected by both small- and large-scale diamond mining continue to suffer from human rights abuses, environmental degradation, and a lack of meaningful socio-economic benefits. These challenges are compounded by the current global diamond sector crisis, resulting in widespread job losses and the erosion of livelihoods across the African continent.
To discuss concrete actions to address these challenges and ensure a more beneficial and responsible trade, the Kimberley Process Civil Society Coalition is organising a webinar on September 9. This panel discussion aims to bring together relevant stakeholders from civil society, competent authorities in diamond-producing and trading countries, the private sector and consumers to explore actionable ways forward.
In a context where the Kimberley Process has repeatedly failed to address systemic issues in the diamond supply chain, and where polished marketing continues to mask harsh realities, the need for genuine reform is urgent. The time has come for all actors—from mine to market—to take responsibility and act in support of community rights and a more responsible diamond trade.
